Chapter 5, Enter Suzy Summary
This chapter starts off by giving some background to the town cop, Joe Blaikey. Joe Blaikey is a good police officer because he knows everyone, knows everything that goes on in his town, and has the ability to "size up a stranger almost instantly." One day, a girl named Suzy comes to Monterey off the bus. All she has is an old suitcase and a little purse with nothing of use inside of it. She goes to the Golden Poppy diner to get a coup of coffee and catches the attention of Joe Blaikey. Joe sits next to Suzy and tries to get her story, however, she resists giving him much information about herself. Joe then warns her to stay out of trouble and even offers to lend her money. Suzy refuses and goes into town somehow ending up...
