The Premade Bean Paste
The premade bean paste, that Sentaro uses at the outset of the novel, symbolizes his indifferent attitude toward being alive. In the same manner that he purchases factory made filling for the dorayaki, Sentaro does not invest time in developing relationships, writing, or participating in his life. He does the least he can get through the day and drinks alone when he is no longer obligated to be at the bakery. When Sentaro starts making his own bean paste, the shift in his approach to dorayaki reflects the shift in his attitude toward living; he is more open to finding meaning.
Alcohol
