Summary
Chapter 9 opens with the time immediately before the Esquire piece hits the newsstand. Truman sends Babe his piece. Babe, while first excited, soon realizes as she reads that the story is quite unlike much of Truman’s previous writing. She is shocked at the part about Slim (Lady Ina), especially as it comes with the also recent split between Slim and Husband Number Three. Then Babe gets to The Sheets story. Babe immediately feels as though it is Bill, and remembers the time she uncovered one of Bill’s affairs. Bill, sensing the girl was becoming too attached, began to distance himself from her, and the girl subsequently threw herself from a hotel window. Ironically, though Babe called Truman to cry after the incident, it was Truman himself who first introduced Bill to the lady. When this incident happened, Babe cried that she...
