Section 1 Katie pp. 3-12. Summary
Katie is sitting in the tub in her New York apartment as Suzanne's Diary to Nicholas begins. She has her cat, Guinevere, and her dog, Merlin, with her. They are watching her as if they are afraid for her. Katie is holding a leather bound diary.
Katie sobs as she remembers her home and her minister father. How could God have let this happen to her? She keeps sobbing as she thinks about Suzanne, the writer of the diary. She can imagine her in her cottage by the ocean. Suzanne and her baby, Nicholas. Suzanne and her husband, Matt. Matt, Katie's former lover. She finally understands bits and pieces of the problem between Matt and her. She slips farther into the tub and continues reading the diary she had received July 19.
