Apparats
Apparats are tablet-like, smartphone-like devices used by individuals in the novel to access the internet and social media, and represent the degree to which people are driven by a need for technology. At no point through the novel is someone without an apparat by choice. The apparats, when used excessively, dehumanize people, such as when Lenny’s friends would rather broadcast his declaration of love to Eunice with their apparats, rather than actually listen to what Lenny has to say.
GlobalTeens
GlobalTeens is a Facebook-like social media platform used by everyone in the novel, and symbolizes the obsession everyone has with being and acting young. The very name of the platform, with emphasis on “Teens,” demonstrates an obsessive drive for youth. The service allows the sending and receiving of messages, photographs, videos, and other files.
