Camp Sunshine
Camp Sunshine is symbolic of life and death. In the prologue, Jarrett says that even years after his time at the camp, people always ask him if his experience there was sad and depressing. For Jarrett, however, the camp taught him the importance of life, and was therefore a happy and positive environment. Being there helped Jarrett understand the ways in which life and death are entangled.
Rock Wall
The rock wall at Camp Sunshine is symbolic of challenges. When Diego first encounters the wall, he is afraid to go up. He will not do so until Jarrett climbs ahead of him. Finally, the rest of the Teen Group hoists Diego out of his chair and up to the top of the wall. The experience symbolizes the individual's ability to overcome challenges with the help of his friends and community.
