Summary
Chapter 52 is from Jemma's perspective and continues in April of 1864 in New York City. Jemma spends her time helping the family prepare for Mary's funeral. She has four young children, ranging down to two years old. Jemma receives a letter from Patience and realizes she has written a warning in code. Nathan takes her for a walk one day, providing fish for their meal. Jemma is worried that Anne-May will come get her. Nathan has money and says he will offer to buy her freedom. Nathan pleads with her not to try to get Sable and Patience out on her own. The next day, Anne-May arrives with Mr. Bigelow and a Pinkerton detective, demanding Jemma. Abby recognizes Anne-May from the day she gave a false name and searched for the book. Anne-May says the government is looking for Jemma. She pledges to fight...
