Summary
Chapter 45 is from Anne-May's perspective and takes place in April of 1864 in New York City. Anne-May is staying at the Brevoort Hotel. She receives a letter from Jubal says he is reading news stories about spies in Maryland and that a Pinkerton detective has been asking questions. He urges her to find the missing journal. The hotel manager asks her for payment and she discovers her money is missing from her room. The manager says he will hold Anne-May's possessions until she can pay the bill. He suggests she go to a pawnshop. She finds the Ladies' House of Industry and introduces herself to Abigail Woolsey using a false name. She offers to help Abigail move some donations.
