Summary
Part Three opens, as the previous sections, with an image of a sunflower. Chapter 40 is from Jemma's perspective and takes place in September of 1863 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Jemma recounts the events during the riot, including that mobs destroyed property and murdered Blacks. Carter, Margaret, and Jemma saved the Woolsey house from the rioters. Georgy, Jane, and Jemma travel to Hammond Hospital at Point Lookout to help Mrs. Abigail Gibbons. Jemma aches with the knowledge that she is so close to Sable and Patience. Mrs. Gibbons says their most important job is to help any runaway slaves seeking asylum as “contraband of war.” The three set to work, cooking, cleaning, and sewing. Jemma encounters a slave from Ambrosia Plantation who says Charlene is about to lose the house. The girl tells Jemma that Jubal's slave Doreen is nearby with her four children. One...
