Summary

Chapter 22 is the first chapter in Part Two. Chapter 22 is from Georgy's perspective and takes place in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island, 1863. Georgy discovers a new map on the wall in the family's New York home, providing the family an opportunity to track the war news. She finds her siblings do not show any respect for her work. Georgy describes the ongoing war, with neither side taking a clear advantage. Eliza remains with Joe who is still recovering. Georgy and Jane take jobs at a new military hospital at Portsmouth Grove. Katharine (Georgy's friend from the hospital ship) is already there. The three are invited to a ball and agree to try to sell copies of Mary's poems to raise money for a new washing machine.
