Summary
Chapter 18 is from Georgy's perspective and takes place June 1862 aboard the Daniel Webster. Georgy writes a letter to Mrs. Woolsey. She writes about the slaves they have seen fleeing their homes, and the fact that they seem devoid of fear while they sing to their children. The nurse named Christine comes down with malaria and a novitiate named Sister Marguerite takes her place. One day, the flag bearer from Joe's regiment arrives, wounded. He reveals Joe is also wounded though he does not know how badly. Joe arrives the next morning. Georgy can tell the doctor who plans to care for him is drunk and the doctor says Joe will die. Georgy demands another doctor and Eliza pleads that they not amputate Joe's leg.
