Summary
Chapter 13 is from Jemma's perspective and takes place Christmas 1861 at Peeler Plantation. Jemma listens to Anne-May griping at Euphemia about money and the household account, including what is in the pantry. When Jemma goes to the slave cabin, she discovers Delly has given birth and the child is dead. Jemma believes Delly killed it. Charl summons LeBaron who refuses to help dig the grave, citing the bad weather. As soon as he is gone, the others rush around, warming the baby as Sally administers an herb. They reveal they dosed the baby with belladonna to make LeBaron think it died. Delly announces they are naming the baby Kofi, which is Joseph's African name. For the next week, they take care of Kofi, careful to keep him hidden and quiet. Joseph makes a coffin and they have a pretend funeral. They do not work...
