Summary
Chapter 9 is from Jemma's perspective and takes place in July 1861 at the Peeler Plantation. Jemma is walking toward home near the sunflower when Harry stops her. He says, “This is not a good place for a young lady” (94) and walks home with her. Jemma's life is better with Harry around. Jemma is jealous of Celeste, and Sable leaves them at home alone one Sunday with instructions to work it out. Celeste (who was previously named Sukey) describes being sold at auction. She shows Jemma the card with Mrs. Woolsey's name and address in New York City.
