Summary
Chapter 5 is from Georgy's perspective and takes place in New York City, in June of 1861. Georgy regains consciousness and knows that fainting could result in being eliminated from the nursing program. Dr. Blackwell, one of the first female doctors, says Georgy should keep smelling salts with her and hands over her certificate. She helps her family with various tasks for the troops while waiting to be assigned. Mrs. Woolsey announces that Charley is accompanying Frank Bacon from the train. The sisters immediately wonder if he is bringing a ring for Georgy and berate her for not accepting his overtures. She makes it clear she is not interested. Eliza arrives and assures Georgy she still wants them to find a nursing position together. Her husband Joe will be with a regiment stationed near Washington, and she hopes to be near him.
