Summary
When Jervis and TJ are young men, their parents pass away, willing them an enormous amount of money. After having a spiritual experience in Italy, Jervis gives his away, but TJ holds onto his and leaves his holdings under Jervis’ care while he travels to Mexico to pursue his Jesuit work. After becoming obsessed with a religious order known as the Beguines—Catholic women who embodied a form of proto-feminism—Jervis decides to look over TJ’s finances. Through a series of chance investments, Jervis accidentally renders TJ a millionaire. When TJ returns from Mexico, he uses this money to purchase multiple restaurants in the Portland area so he can pursue his culinary passions.
