Summary
Chapter 32 begins after Marc and Judith have driven the four kids back to the summer house. On a couch, Caroline lovingly tends to Lisa, and Emmanuelle is surprisingly soothing as well. After much time passes, Ralph comes into the room after having taken a shower, apologetic about what has happened. Marc, who suspects Ralph may be Julia’s rapist, observes him very closely.
In Chapter 33, as Marc and Caroline sit with Julia, Marc tenderly asks if he can inspect Julia, so that he can confirm his diagnosis. Caroline asks Julia what had happened, and she says she can’t remember. Some time later, Stanley returns to the house: as he walked back to the house, he reports that he had seen the car he had hit on the way to the beach, with the key still in the ignition.
