Part 1, Storm In June: Chapter 19 Summary
Arlette Corail is in the village restaurant as the town waits for the Germans. The mayor is staying, and there is news of an armistice. Arlette feels confident about her ability to survive and come out ahead. She recalls watching Corbin's belongings become buried in rubble and seeing the look of terror on his face. She takes his car and escapes to this village, where she has been living comfortably for several days. She is interested in Hubert because he is related to the wealthy Maltetes.
