Rakhi
Rakhi is the main character and first person narrator of the novel. When Rakhi is just seven years old, both her mother and father are killed in a bus accident. In the wake of their deaths, Rakhi’s aunt and uncle assume her care. However, when Rakhi’s uncle proves abusive, Rakhi decides to run away, ultimately riding the train all the way to Bombay. Almost immediately upon her arrival, she meets a young boy name Babloo, who is living on the streets. Because Rakhi is all alone with nowhere to go, she agrees to join Babloo and a group of other street children. For several years, Rakhi lives on the street, primarily relying on Babloo for her survival.
