Religion

Religion is a central theme in this novel as a distrustful, abused girl learns that sometimes, miracles really do happen. Meredith is first introduced to religion by Paula Mues who is a sort of religious fanatic. At first she takes advantage of Mrs. Mues' religion by using Fridays, the day that Mrs. Mues has set aside for purification and personal communion with God, as a day to spend time alone with Andy, Mrs. Mues' son and Meredith's boyfriend. Although Andy is also a strong believer in religion, he does not appear to be as fanatical as his mother and welcomes Meredith's visits.

Since Andy was paralyzed in an accident the night of his high school graduation, both he and his mother have prayed for his recovery. Mrs. Mues has made her son an appointment to see a victim soul. These victim souls are pious people who are able...
