Religion

Religion is a central theme in this novel as a distrustful, abused girl learns that sometimes, miracles really do happen. Meredith is first introduced to religion by Paula Mues who is a sort of religious fanatic. At first she takes advantage of Mrs. Mues' religion by using Fridays, the day that Mrs. Mues has set aside for purification and personal communion with God, as a day to spend time alone with Andy, Mrs. Mues' son and Meredith's boyfriend. Although Andy is also a strong believer in religion, he does not appear to be as fanatical as his mother and welcomes Meredith's visits.
