Chapters Nineteen and Twenty Summary
In Chapter Nineteen, when Meredith walks back into the kitchen, Nigel and Mrs. Mues are quiet. She hugs them goodbye and wishes Mrs. Mues luck, but doesn't really believe that she will ever see her again. She walks across the complex to her own condo and is surprised when the door opens as she stands waiting. Her mother tells her they are going out to eat. Meredith tries to resist but her mother demands that she go.
Meredith's mind switches back to a time she watched her mother getting ready. As a child she adored her mother. Her mother dabs Meredith's cheeks with blush and tells her she is beautiful. The memory makes the present Meredith feel guilty. She simply says "Okay Mom" when her mother tells her to hurry.
Meredith doesn't like the boxy, beige outfit...
