Summary
After Margalo’s departure, Stuart is “heartbroken” and decides he will “run away from home without telling anybody, and go out into the world and look for Margalo” (73). In the process, he decides to “seek [his] fortune” as well (73). Before leaving, Stuart takes one of his mother’s hairs from her comb to remember her by. Once he leaves, Stuart visits Dr. Carey, who provides Stuart with a tiny automobile to drive in and look for Margalo. The automobile is both “noiseless” and “invisible” (79). By accident, Stuart turns the car invisible after starting it. The car drives around invisibly, and only becomes visible again after it has crashed into a wastepaper basket. Dr. Carey assures Stuart he will fix the car; in the meantime, Stuart buys himself new clothes. Stuart then begins his journey.
