The author uses the theme of sexuality to explore misconceptions and assumptions about gay sexuality.
Andrea is open about being a lesbian at the outset of the novel. Her sexuality is does not come into question even when she begins a sexual relationship with a man. The reader understands Andrea’s truth, yet must also confront the hows and whys of Andrea’s relationship with Ryan. Andrea admits that there is something powerful in being able to kiss Ryan. Because of this, it is easy to see why Andrea would continue to be drawn to Ryan. Andrea has been deprived of power. Her sexuality was dismissed by her parents, resulting in a loss of a meaningful relationship with them.
