Summary

In Chapter 39, Rasbach and Jennings receive another anonymous tip, seemingly from the same person as before, saying that they should search the Krupp house for the murder weapon. Rasbach decides to heed the tip this time. That evening, Brigid arrives at the Krupps’ house. She has cut her hair in the same fashion as Karen, and she once again threatens to testify against Karen if Tom does not have sex with her, so Tom has sex with her. In Chapter 40, Rasbach arrives at the Krupps’ house with a search warrant. The police find Karen’s gun in the garage. Tom realizes that Brigid must have planted it there.

In Chapter 41, Tom, Karen, and Calvin confer about the gun and about Brigid. Tom confesses about his previous affair with Brigid and the two recent times they had sex. Karen forgives him because of the respective...
