Importance: Throughout Tsukiko's time at the market with Sensei, she marvels at Sensei's curious behaviors. Although he has invited her on the excursion, he seems unconcerned with Tsukiko's whereabouts. He is therefore content to be in her general proximity, without hinging his emotions upon her nearness or her every thought and feeling. Tsukiko is then even more surprised when Sensei impulsively purchases a pair of chicks. He later explains that he bought two, because if he had only gotten one, it would have been lonely. The chicks, and Sensei's reason for buying two, are symbolic of Tsukiko's and Sensei's relationship. The chicks are also representative of the characters' longing and need for companionship.
