Lazlo Strange
For a majority of the novel, Lazlo Strange is a 20-year-old man. He believes he was born in the Kingdom of Zosma. There was a war when Lazlo was born that took the lives of his parents. The monks at Zemonan Abbey took care of Lazlo during his childhood. Lazlo Strange is not his real name, but he never found out the name his parents gave him. The monks gave Lazlo his name because Lazlo was the name of one of the monk’s uncles, who was quiet because he had lost his tongue, and this reminded the monk of baby Lazlo because he would never cry. Strange is the surname that all orphans in the Kingdom of Zosma receive.
Lazlo learns to copy manuscripts in the abbey, which is known for its scriptorium. When he is 13 years old, he goes to the Great Library of Zosma...
