Yong'an

Yong'an is a mythical city that exists in China. The city is hugely populated and industrial, but it contains many rare beasts. The narrator lives in an apartment by herself on the 17th floor of the Peach Blossom Villas, from which she can see the Splendid River. Close by is the Dolphin Bar, where the narrator and her closest friends gather to swap stories and drink liquor late into the night. The city is home to a large university with one of the greatest zoological departments in the world. The professor is the brightest and most promising man on the faculty, and he runs the lab for the university. Inside the lab, he concocts all sorts of experiments, such as the creation of the heartsick beasts.
