"Sir Stephen", part 4. Narration describes how the welts left on O's body by Sir Stephen's beating take several weeks to disappear, how Sir Stephen and Rene discuss (in O's silent presence) how powerfully those marks remind them of her submission, and how they become determined to keep her marked in such a way. Meanwhile, Rene realizes that for Sir Stephen to not have a key to O's apartment might seem, to Sir Stephen, as a barrier that he (Rene) is putting between him (Sir Stephen) and O.
