Love vs. Security
Bonnie Lamb spends the novel attempting to discover the difference between love and security. Bonnie has had many boyfriends in her life who were men who did not feel the need to get a good job and take care of her. Bonnie grew up believing a man must have a job in order to make a decent husband. Therefore, when Bonnie met a man who had a good job and seemed devoted to this job she decided he had to make a good husband. Bonnie found Max boring during their courtship and was often annoyed with his behavior, especially his seeming obsession with his job.
