Chapters 28-31 Summary
Tile survives the gunshot thanks to a bullet-proof vest. However, Tile is not allowed to join the pursuit when fellow officers arrive due to paperwork generated by the shooting. Back in Miami, a detective has begun to investigate death of Tony Torres. The detective goes to the Torres home and learns from a neighbor about the strangers who have been living there. The detective leaves a card for the widow who is due home at any time. Neria does arrive early the next morning, finding the candy and roses Fred left for Edie. Neria is angry that her husband was entertaining women in their home. The next morning, Neria calls the detective who left his card and learns about Tony's death.
