The Devil On The Staircase Summary
Born to a common bricklayer, Quirinus lives in the village of Sulle Scale in the highest ridges above Positano. His father worked every day going up and down the staircases that make up the village. He is the one who repairs the stairs and he does his job with pride. One day, his father is lagging behind him and he leans on a red gate to rest when it swings open. Surprised, because the door has always been locked, he asks his father, but is assured the stairs go all the way to the bottom and crosses himself. After his father dies, Quirinus Calvino works for winemaker Don Carlotta. His daughter Lithadora is beautiful and Quirinus discovers that she is sneaking out at night to see an Arab trader who gave her an ankle bracelet...
