Point of View
The author takes an unconventional approach to point of view throughout the novel. Rather than presenting the Stone Blind narrative from the single point of view of a single character, she writes the novel from a network of points of view. Indeed, each new chapter initiatives a shift in the narrative vantage point. Such formal shifts are indicated by the chapter titles. For example, the opening “Gorgoneion" chapter of Part One, "Sister," presents the Gorgoneion’s first person point of view. She begins her chapter saying, “I see you. I see all those who men call monsters” (3). These lines establish the parameters of the Gorgoneion’s narrative vantage and voice.
