The Supernatural
The primary theme of Stolen is the idea of supernatural creatures as reality. In the novel, a wide variety of supernatural races exist and live undetected among ordinary humans, typically appearing normal for the most part. This is possible because they have adapted in ways that enable them to hold down ordinary jobs while secretly leading parallel lives as werewolves, vampires, and witches.
Stolen's main character, Elena, works as a journalist and her boyfriend, Clay, is an anthropologist and college professor. Half-demon Leah is a sheriff's deputy in Wisconsin. No one who knows them in those roles suspects that they have supernatural powers, just as Ruth and Paige practice witchcraft while carrying on seemingly ordinary lives. Elena manages to keep her identity secret by living in Stonehaven, a fairly remote enclave in Canada, with Clay and the other members of their werewolf pack. They have set up...
