Summary
Chapter 3 opens with Wren recalling a memory of her childhood. Nore and Jarel had tried to arrange a marriage between Wren and Oak with the cooperation of Oak's father Madoc who hoped to control Oak. The day after that failed attempt, Oak came to the camp overseen by Nore, Jarel, and Madoc. Wren was “staked to a post like a goat” (49). Wren was shocked that Oak gave her food. She was always hungry, but she was skeptical of his kindness. She expected him to make demands in return, but he offered to play with her. They played a game with three small fox figurines that were thrown like dice with different scores depending on how they landed. Wren suggested they play for stakes. When Oak lost, he tried to help her escape but could not get through her magical bindings with his knife...
