Gwen Proctor aka Gina Royal

Gwen Proctor, who is also known as Gina Royal, is the heroine and narrator of this novel. She is the mother of Connor and Lanny. Gwen is also the ex-wife of Melvin Royal.

Gwen undergoes a transformation in this novel as she fights to keep her children safe from the people who erroneously believe that she played some role in the murders her husband committed. Gwen believes that as Gina she was gullible and easy to manipulate. She thinks it is because she had these character traits that Melvin chose her as his wife. She criticizes herself for being trusting of her husband and not knowing earlier that he was a serial killer.
