Summary
In Chapter 1, Louisa Clark arrived in New York. The man at the airport’s immigration hall asked her questions about her purpose for traveling. Louisa described her new job as a paid companion and told him about her former employer with whom she had fallen in love. Louisa said the man had chosen to end his own life, but now she had a new boyfriend who was a paramedic back in London. Louisa’s friend and coworker Nathan met her in the arrivals section of the airport. Nathan drove Louisa to the hotel, called the Lavery, where their employers, the Gopniks, lived.
