The novel is set in Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles is the second most populous city in the United States. Maggie has lived in Los Angeles ever since she moved away from her home state of Vermont. She works as a writer and editor for the Rocque Museum. The novel mostly focuses on the Los Angeles art world, specifically the world of high-end galleries, modern art museums, and wealthy collectors. Maggie is somewhat peripheral to this world, but she has access to it via her position at the Rocque. This access, along with her own personal resourcefulness, allows her to effectively investigate Kim’s disappearance.
