Summary
Chapter 1 opens in modern-day Los Angeles. The novel’s protagonist and narrator, Maggie Richter, is a writer and editor in the public relations department of the Rocque Museum. When she was younger, Maggie aspired to be a journalist. The Rocque is a renowned modern art museum. Soon, the Rocque will be hosting the newest gallery exhibition of renowned visual artist Kim Lord. When Maggie arrives at the Rocque, she speaks with Yegina, who is Maggie’s friend as well as her coworker in the public relations department. Yegina says that Kim Lord did not come to the museum that morning for press photos. Reluctantly, Maggie calls her ex-boyfriend, Greg Shaw Ferguson (who is now Kim’s boyfriend) to ask if he knows where Kim is, but Greg does not answer the phone.
