Ulysses Temper
Ulysses Temper is a young British soldier who meets Evelyn Skinner at the end of World War II. After the war ends, he returns home to the East End of London to find that his wife, Peggy, had a baby with another man and wants a divorce. He starts working at Col’s bar, The Stoat, and helps Peggy raise her daughter, Alys. Later on, he receives a visit from a lawyer who informs him that Arturo Bernadini, the man he whose life he saved in Florence, years before, died and bequeathed him the entirety of his estate. Ulysses knows that this opportunity could help him to build a new life, outside of the poverty of the East End, and he asks Peggy to join him. Peg refuses his offer but insists that he take Alys with him. Ulysses moves to Florence with Alys and Cress.
