Laura

Laura is the main narrator of the novel. She was born and raised in Mexico City although she spent several years studying in Paris and pursuing an advanced degree that she returned to Mexico to finish. She is an only child and was raised primarily by her mother. Laura always had an inkling that she would not have children but she cemented this decision in her thirties when she chose to have her tubes tied. Laura is single though she has had serious relationships in her earlier years.

She is militant about women’s empowerment and believes that more women should stand up against the expectation that they devote their lives to husbands and children. She begins the novel in this way and creates a barrier between her and her best friend, Alina, when Alina changes her mind and tries to have a baby.
