Jos
The novel begins in Jos with Chapter 1, but in Chapter 2 changes to Ilesa. Yejide escapes to Jos at the end of Part 3, in Chapter 39. She says she escapes to Jos because she had “heard it was the most beautiful city in Nigeria and I had always wanted to go there” (282). Yejide moves to Jos to escape the political violence in Lagos, and also to get away from the grief and deception in her home with Akin. The novel starts from her perspective in 2008 in Chapter 1, as she packs to leave Jos to attend Akin’s father’s funeral. Jos has recently also experienced several traumatic shootings of university students, which is partly why she was looking for a way to get out of the city after over 15 years living there.
