Summary
In Chapter 25, Yejide describes meeting Akin. She told Akin she wanted to wait to have sex until they were married, remembering what one of her father’s wives had predicted: “I would end up a whore like my mother, pregnant by a man who would never marry her” (180). She wanted to send a blood-stained cloth from her wedding night - proof that she was a virgin. But it did not matter because her father died before the wedding. After her wedding night she had gone home alone since her step-mothers avoided her. When Dotun told her whatever he told her, she felt the same loneliness. She tries to wake her son but he wants to sleep and “loneliness wrapped itself around me like a shroud” (182).
In Chapter 26, the doctor tells Akin that Sesan has sickle-cell disease because Yejide had sex with someone else...
