Summary
In Chapter 42, with an hour and three minutes left to disarm the bomb, the only hope was that Shah would be willing to give Williams and the others answers. Shah confirmed there were bombs set to detonate, but asked why he should tell them where the bombs were. He said that if America was attacked, the fear the Americans would feel would cause them to destroy their own freedom, ultimately doing the terrorists’ work for them. Shah sounded confident, but Ellen noticed a quiver of fear in his hand.
Shah argued that if he told Williams where the bombs were, his clients might kill him. Williams responded that Shah should be glad he was in their custody unless there was a high-level informant among them, a statement that shook Shah enough that Ellen realized he was afraid of the HLI.
