Summary
In Chapter 1, Ellen Adams, Secretary of State for the new President Douglas Williams, considered how much she loved her country as her government jet prepared to land in Washington, D.C. As Secretary of State, she had the opportunity to help mend alliances broken by the former President, Eric Dunn. At the same time, she feared the possibility that she might make things worse.
Upon landing, Ellen had to rush to get to the State of the Union address. She had not had time to shower and had just returned from a tour of a fertilizer plant in South Korea. Charles Boynton, her Chief of Staff, warned her that the President was angry with her for being late.
