Current Laws vs Outdated Ideals
In Starters, written by Lissa Price, we are given a glimpse into a possible future reality in which war has taken a savage toll. All middle aged people are killed when inoculations against an airborne attack are restricted to the very young and the very old. As a result, humanity is divided into two groups - Elders and Starters. The Starters are those who are lucky enough to have grandparents, so they live in relative luxury compared to those who lost their parents and have no one else. Those youngsters are either homeless, or live in institutions in substandard conditions. Those who are still free live under the constant threat of capture or worse.
