Introduction Summary
In the introduction we are introduced to the main character Leo Borlock who is also the narrator of the story. He is twelve-years-old and about to move from his home in Pennsylvania to Mica Arizona. On moving day his Uncle Pete gives Leo his porcupine quill tie (which Leo always liked and admired). Leo decides he is going to collect porcupine quill ties. Fast-forward two years and the story moves to Mica, Arizona. Leo is now fourteen-years-old.
It is a custom of the local newspaper to write a brief article on those celebrating birthdays. Leo's name appears with a line about his desire to collect porcupine ties. Later that day Leo finds a gift on his porch, a tie with three porcupines on it.
