Origami
Origami symbolizes both the separation and support that Graham and Audra feel in relation to their son Matthew. Graham and Audra do not fully understand why Matthew is so interested in origami, and they do not very much like the other members of the origami club. However, they support Matthew in his interest.
Asperger Syndrome
Asperger syndrome symbolizes the inherent challenges of parenting. Graham often seems to think that his role as a father is made more difficult by the fact that Matthew is on the autism spectrum. In some ways that may be true. However, the narrative repeatedly juxtaposes the challenges of raising Matthew with the similarly intense challenges faced by other parents.
