Summary
The novel opens in a grocery store in New York City. Graham Cavanagh is a man in his late fifties. He is a medical venture capitalist. He is married to freelance graphic designer Audra Daltry, who is about 15 years younger than Graham. Audra is Graham’s second wife. They have been married for about 12 years. Audra is far more outgoing than Graham, who is rather reserved.. In the grocery store, Audra stops to have long conversations with everyone she recognizes.
Graham and Audra finish shopping and arrive back at their apartment, where their friend Bitsy is watching over their 10-year-old son Matthew. Matthew has Asperger syndrome, which is a form of autism.
