Identity
The author uses the characterization of Billy and Jammer and the contrast of their lives to show that society can try to force its perception of people’s identity on them, but people have a choice. They can either embrace the identity society gives them or they can successfully find their own path and not become the labels that others try to use to place them under. Billy's life shows that one does not have to succumb to the identify that others try to give them, but can instead find their own path. It also shows the benefits of averting those labels and following you own path in order to forge one’s own identity. Jammer's life chronicles that of someone who chooses to accept society’s labels and also shows the hazards of doing so.
