Billy's mother is obsessed with eagles and their nests to the point that when one that she has chosen to live near no longer exists, she moves her entire family. For her, eagles symbolize a connection with Dennis who is the person who introduced her to eagles. The eagles also symbolize a renewed life for her. So when the nest goes, she has to go somewhere else in order to find the hope for this renewed life. In addition, the eagles symbolize stamina and resilience which gives her the power to endure problems. They symbolize the courage to look towards the future and the freedom to do so. She loses these things when she thinks the eagles are gone, which is why she has to move to find another nest. They provide the stability that Lil provides for Dennis.
