Billy lives in Florida with his mother and sister. He currently lives in Fort Pierce, Florida. However, he has lived in Key Largo, Clearwater, Everglades City and Punta Gorde since his father left the family. A major portion of the narrative takes part in Florida. In addition to the fact that Billy lives here, Dennis and Summer spend time here as well. Baxter comes to Florida to try to kill a panther.

The state represents the state of the world today in which wildlife and humans fight for the same living space and certain humans show a lack of respect for nature. In addition, with so many tourist taking over the land, it represents a place in which is hard to find one's roots which is the problem Billy and his family have as they are constantly on the move.
